Which Province's Sales Tax Rate Should You Use?
Choosing the correct province is one of the most important parts of using a Canada sales tax calculator. Different place‑of‑supply rules apply depending on what you buy and where the supply takes place.
Goods bought in person
The province where goods are delivered or made available.
Goods shipped
Destination province often applies when goods are mailed or couriered.
Services
Recipient's Canadian address is usually relevant under general rules.
Real property
Place of supply is generally where the property is located.
📌 Digital or intangible property follows separate IPP rules.

How Canadian Sales Tax Is Calculated
A Canada sales tax calculator uses the purchase amount and applicable tax rate to estimate how much sales tax should be added. The location is called the "place of supply," and it can determine whether 5%, 13%, 14%, or 15% GST/HST applies to a taxable supply. Basic groceries are a zero‑rated supply with 0% GST/HST regardless of place of supply.
Calculate Tax From a Before‑Tax Price
Sales Tax = Before‑Tax Price × Applicable Tax Rate. The estimated final price is then Before‑Tax Price + Sales Tax.
Reverse Calculate Tax From a Tax‑Inclusive Total
Before‑Tax Price = Tax‑Inclusive Total ÷ (1 + Applicable Tax Rate). Subtract the before‑tax price from the final amount to estimate the tax included.
📐 Basic Sales Tax Formulas
Final Price = Price + Tax
Reverse: Price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate)
Example: A $100 purchase in Ontario (13% HST) adds $13.00 tax, total $113.00. In Quebec, $100 gets $5.00 GST + $9.98 QST = $114.98 total (rounded to the nearest cent).
When the Standard Sales Tax Calculator May Not Give the Full Tax Picture
A standard sales tax calculator usually assumes that the amount entered is subject to the general sales tax rate for the selected jurisdiction. However, the actual tax treatment can change depending on the product, service, customer, and place of supply.
Zero‑rated supplies
Including certain basic groceries. A zero‑rated supply has a 0% GST/HST rate regardless of its place of supply.
Exempt supplies
Supplies that do not follow standard taxable‑supply rules.
Special provincial treatment
Products that receive special provincial sales tax treatment.
Multi‑province transactions
Certain transactions involve more than one province.
First Nations situations
Some First Nations tax situations and eligible purchasers.
Cross‑border & imported
Certain cross‑border or imported transactions.
Digital products
Digital products, services, and intangible personal property.
Other exceptions
Any situation where standard place‑of‑supply rules do not apply.
