Canada Donation Tax Credit Calculator 2026
If you donate $1,000, how much can you claim through the Canadian charitable donation tax credit? A donation tax credit calculator in Canada can give you a quick estimate, but it does not mean the CRA will send you the full donation back.
The credit reduces income tax you owe, but it does not work like a cash refund for the amount you donated. Your province, tax year, eligible donation amount, and other tax details affect the result. CRA confirms that charitable donations generally create non-refundable federal and provincial or territorial tax credits.

How the Canada Donation Tax Credit Calculator Works
A donation tax credit calculator Canada starts with the amount CRA allows you to claim, then applies federal and provincial rules. You only need three main details.
1. Enter your donation
Use the eligible amount on your official receipt โ not always what you paid.
2. Pick your province
Provincial credit is calculated separately from the federal credit.
3. Choose the tax year
Pick the year of the gift or the year you're using a carried-forward amount.
4. Click calculate
See your estimated federal + provincial credit and net cost of giving.
๐ The amount you paid is not always the amount that creates the tax credit. Look for the eligible amount on your receipt.
How Much Tax Credit Can You Get for a Donation in Canada?
A donation tax credit calculator Canada normally combines a federal credit with the applicable provincial or territorial credit. The federal calculation uses a lower rate on the first $200 of eligible donations and higher rates on amounts above $200.
2026 Federal Tax Rates
| Lowest federal rate | 14% |
| Second rate | 20.5% |
| Middle rate | 26% |
| Higher rate | 29% |
| Highest rate | 33% |
Worked Example โ $1,000 Donation
| First $200 ร 14% | $28 |
| Remaining $800 ร 29% | $232 |
| Estimated federal credit | $260 |
Provincial or Territorial Credit
| Ontario lower rate | 5.05% |
| Ontario highest rate | 11.16% |
| Federal credit | Calculated separately |
| Provincial credit | Added separately |
So, a $1,000 donation does not mean a $1,000 refund. It means you have an eligible amount that can produce a tax credit. The credit is non-refundable. It first reduces tax otherwise payable. If you owe little or no tax, the credit does not automatically turn into an equal cash payment from CRA.
2026 Provincial & Territorial Donation Credit Rates
CRA publishes different donation credit rates across Canada. Quebec and Alberta don't follow the standard "lowest rate / highest rate" pattern used by most other provinces.
| Province / Territory | First $200 | Amount Over $200 | Highest Credit Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta (AB) | 60.00% | 21.00% | n/a | Special 60% first-$200 rate since 2023 |
| British Columbia (BC) | 5.60% | 16.80% | 20.50% | Lowest rate rose with 2026 BC Budget |
| Manitoba (MB) | 10.80% | 17.40% | n/a | Standard lowest/highest structure |
| New Brunswick (NB) | 9.40% | 17.95% | n/a | Uses a set 17.95% rate, not the top bracket |
| Newfoundland & Lab. (NL) | 8.70% | 21.80% | n/a | Standard lowest/highest structure |
| Nova Scotia (NS) | 8.79% | 21.00% | n/a | Standard lowest/highest structure |
| Northwest Territories (NT) | 5.90% | 14.05% | n/a | Standard lowest/highest structure |
| Nunavut (NU) | 4.00% | 11.50% | n/a | Lowest provincial/territorial rates |
| Ontario (ON) | 5.05% | 11.16% | n/a | Set rate โ does not use ON's top personal rate |
| Prince Edward Island (PE) | 9.50% | 19.00% | n/a | Standard lowest/highest structure |
| Quebec (QC) | 20.00% | 24.00% | 25.75% | Federal credit reduced 16.5% (abatement) |
| Saskatchewan (SK) | 10.50% | 14.50% | n/a | Standard lowest/highest structure |
| Yukon (YT) | 6.40% | 12.80% | n/a | Standard lowest/highest structure |
The provincial credit for the first $200 is generally the lowest personal tax rate, and the credit above $200 is generally the highest personal tax rate โ except Alberta, BC, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, and Yukon, which use set rates. Combined federal and provincial credits on donations above $200 typically range from about 25% to over 50%, depending on the province and income level. Rates are current for the 2026 tax year and may be updated during the year.
How the Donation Tax Credit Is Built
The credit is not one flat percentage. It is a federal credit plus a separate provincial or territorial credit, and the federal side uses two rates split at $200.
Start with the eligible amount
The receipt shows the eligible amount. A benefit received with the donation can reduce it. If you paid $100 for a charity dinner and received a $30 meal, the eligible amount is $70.
Apply the federal two-tier rate
The first $200 gets the lowest federal donation rate (14% for 2026). The amount over $200 gets the higher rate (29% standard, or 33% if your income crosses the top threshold).
Add the provincial credit
The provincial or territorial credit is calculated separately. Most provinces use their lowest rate on the first $200 and their highest rate above $200, but Alberta, BC, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, and Yukon use set rates.
Apply the 75% of net income limit
Your annual donation claim is generally limited to 75% of your net income. Certain capital-property gifts have different limits. Quebec does not apply this limit.
Reduce tax otherwise payable
The credit is non-refundable. It reduces income tax you owe, but if your tax payable is already low, the unused value does not automatically become a cash refund.
๐ Donation Credit Formula (Simplified)
First $200 โ the first $200 of eligible donations gets the lowest federal rate (14% in 2026) plus the province's first-$200 rate.
Amount Over $200 โ the remaining eligible amount gets the higher federal rate (29%, or 33% at the top income tier) plus the province's over-$200 rate.
Provincial credit โ calculated with the province's own donation rates, then added to the federal credit.
75% of net income limit โ general cap on how much you can claim in a year. Quebec does not apply this cap.
The federal credit for Quebec residents is reduced by the 16.5% Quebec federal tax abatement. Unused eligible donations can generally be carried forward for five years (10 years for ecologically sensitive land).
What This Calculator Does Not Cover
This calculator estimates the standard federal and provincial donation credit. Some situations need professional guidance or a full tax return.
Gifts of Capital Property
Listed securities, ecologically sensitive land, and certain capital-property gifts have special rules that can change the donation limit and the treatment of capital gains.
Top Marginal Rate Tier
The 33% federal donation rate applies only to donors whose income crosses the top threshold. A basic calculator may not capture every top-tier interaction.
Spouse Allocation Decisions
Combining donations with a spouse is allowed, but deciding who claims them can change the result. This calculator does not optimise that choice.
Carry-Forward Timing
Carrying unused donations forward for up to five years can change the credit if your income changes. This calculator does not model multi-year timing.
Quebec Provincial Return
Quebec uses its own provincial return and does not apply the 75% net-income limit. The federal credit is reduced by the 16.5% abatement.
Non-Resident and Treaty Situations
Non-resident donors, treaty exemptions, and cross-border giving rules are outside the scope of a standard donation credit calculator.
Corporate Donations
Corporations claim donations as a deduction, not as a personal tax credit. This calculator is for individual tax returns only.
Advantage Adjustments
If a donation includes a benefit (a meal, a gift, an auction item), the eligible amount is reduced. Always use the eligible amount from the official receipt.
Should You Claim the Donation This Year or Carry It Forward?
You do not always have to claim the full eligible donation amount in the year you made the gift. CRA generally lets you use unused donations for up to five years. Gifts of ecologically sensitive land have a 10-year carry-forward period.
๐ก If Your Taxable Income Is Low This Year
If your taxable income is low this year, you can compare:
- Claiming the full eligible amount now
- Claiming only part now
- Carrying the unused amount forward
๐ Why Timing Changes the Result
- A higher-income year can produce a different credit result because the federal donation calculation uses different rates above the $200 threshold and has special rules for higher-income taxpayers.
- Carrying forward can be useful if you expect your income to rise in a future year.
- The calculator should help you compare amounts, not act as personal tax advice.
Why Your Donation Tax Credit May Be Different From What You Expected
Your donation tax credit calculator Canada result can differ from a quick calculation because Canadian donation claims have several rules. Here are the main reasons:
For that reason, treat the calculator as an estimated donation tax credit, not as your final income-tax refund.
What the Calculator Result Means
The result from a donation tax credit calculator Canada is an estimate of the federal and applicable provincial or territorial tax credit created by your eligible donation. Keep these three numbers separate:
Donation amount
What you actually gave.
Eligible donation amount
What CRA allows you to claim โ the figure on your receipt.
Tax credit
The estimated amount that reduces income tax payable. Non-refundable.
Net cost of giving
Donation amount minus the estimated tax credit. What the gift actually costs you after tax.
Your final tax result still depends on your complete tax return. A charity tax credit calculator cannot know every item on that return unless you enter those details.
